IISSB – Guide for Candidates
The Inter Services Selection Board (ISSB) is a highly reputed institution in Pakistan responsible for selecting candidates for the following branches of the armed forces:
- Army
- Air Force
- Navy
The ISSB use a rigorous selection process that evaluates candidates across multiple dimensions, including mental aptitude, physical fitness, moral character, and social skills. Beyond assessing general proficiency, the board ensures that candidates possess the specialized abilities necessary to successfully complete initial training and perform effectively in demanding and challenging operational environments.
ISSB– Selection Process
- The application process starts with an ISSB advertisement in the leading newspapers.
Each branch of the armed forces has its eligibility criteria. - Candidates must meet the minimum age, educational qualifications, and physical standards required for the branch they are applying to.
- Applications are submitted online through the respective armed forces recruitment portals or via designated recruiting offices. Candidates must provide verified academic certificates, CNIC, domicile, and other relevant documents.
- Candidates are shortlisted based on initial eligibility and preliminary screening.
- The shortlisted candidates receive an official call-up letter indicating the assigned ISSB center, date, and reporting time.
- Tests are conducted at one of the official ISSB centers in Pakistan, including the following. Candidates are expected to stay at the center for the full duration of the ISSB tests, usually 4 days:
- ISSB Gujranwala – Punjab
- ISSB Kohat – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
- ISSB Malir – Sindh
- ISSB Quetta – Balochistan
- ISSB Peshawar – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
ISSB Test - Structure
Candidates are called to the assigned ISSB center for the tests. They stay at the center for four days to take part in different tests and interviews. Based on experiences of previous applicants and to give a rough idea to new candidates, the 4-day activities generally include the following.
1. Screening and Documentation
- Initial Screening: Applications, educational qualifications, and age are checked.
- Documentation Check: Academic certificates, CNIC, domicile, and other documents are verified.
2. Psychological Tests
- Written Tests: Include verbal and non-verbal aptitude tests to assess intelligence and problem-solving, and a personality assessment for traits like confidence and responsibility.
- Thematic Apperception Test (TAT): Candidates write stories based on pictures to evaluate imagination, motivation, and personality.
- Word Association Test (WAT): Candidates quickly respond to words, showing spontaneous thoughts and emotional traits.
- Situation Reaction Test (SRT): Candidates react to hypothetical scenarios, testing judgment, problem-solving, and social intelligence.
3. Group Testing
- Group Discussion (GD): Collective discussion on a topic.
- Group Planning Exercise (GPE): Team problem-solving; leadership is observed.
- Outdoor Tasks (OOT/Obstacle Course): Physical tasks and team coordination challenges.
- Leaderless Group Discussion: Leadership potential observed without formal roles.
4. Physical and Medical Assessment
- Physical Fitness Tests: Running, push-ups, sit-ups, and obstacle courses.
- Medical Examination: Ensures candidates are fit for military training.
5. Interview by the Board
- Personal interview by senior officers.
- Focus on motivation, general knowledge, current affairs awareness, ethics, and mental resilience.
6. Final Review
- Scores from all tests are combined.
- Only candidates showing mental aptitude, leadership potential, physical fitness, and ethical integrity are recommended for selection.
Eligibility for ISSB
- Army: Typically requires candidates to have completed F.Sc/A-level (for PN Cadet) or a graduate degree (for other branches). Age, physical fitness, and marital status criteria are also specified.
- Navy: Requires F.Sc/A-level for cadet entry or graduation for specialized branches like Operations, Engineering, and IT. Height and fitness standards vary by branch.
- Air Force: Similar to the Army and Navy, with additional focus on academic subjects such as Physics and Mathematics for technical branches.
How to Apply for ISSB
To apply for ISSB, candidates must first check the eligibility criteria for the specific branch of the armed forces they wish to join. Applications are submitted online through the official recruitment portals of the Army, Navy, or Air Force, or at designated recruiting offices. Applicants must provide verified documents, including academic certificates, CNIC, domicile, and other relevant paperwork.

COURSES OF PAKISTAN ARMY, AIR FORCE & NAVY
There are various courses to join the Pakistan Army, Pakistan Air Force (PAF), and Pakistan Navy. You can apply for any course depending on your eligibility. Qualified ISSB candidates undergo training for a specific period to prepare them for service in their respective branch of the armed forces.

ARMY
The Pakistan Army offers several commissioned entry courses, including:
- PMA Long Course — the main commissioned entry course for officers.
- Technical Cadet Course (TCC) — for engineering/technical officer induction.
- Lady Cadet Course (LCC) — for female officer candidates.
- Army Medical Cadet Course (AMC) — for medical graduates.
- Armed Forces Nursing Services (AFNS) — for nursing service officers.
- Short Service Commissions (SSC / DSSC) — for specialized or graduate entries.
AIR FORCE
The Pakistan Air Force offers commissioned officer courses under Permanent Commission (PC) and Short Service Commission (SSC/SPSSC). The main branches include:
- General Duty Pilot (GDP) — pilot training and flying branch.
- Aeronautical Engineering (CAE) — engineering branch for aircraft/avionics.
- Air Defence — air defence operations and systems.
- Admin & Special Duties — administrative/operations support roles.
