LAT Test for Admission in BS Law Programs

The Law Admission Test (LAT) is a requirement for students who want admission in the 5-year LLB or BS Law programs. This test is conducted by HEC through it testing body Education Testing Council (ETC

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has made LAT mandatory for admission in law programs in all universities in Pakistan.

■ Eligibility Criteria

A candidate is eligible for LAT if he or she:

  • Has passed Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) / Intermediate or an equivalent qualification with 12 years of education
  • Has completed A-Levels or another equivalent qualification recognized in Pakistan
  • Is awaiting the final result of Intermediate or equivalent examinations

■ Test Format

The total marks of the test are 100 and students must score at least 50 marks to pass.
The paper is divided into two major sections:

Part I
75 MCQs)
Time : 100 Minutes
English 20 MCQs
General Knowledge 20 MCQs
Pakistan Studies 10 MCQs
Islamiat 10 MCQs
Mathematics  05 MCQs
Urdu 10 MCQs
Part II
(Two Essays Writing Tasks)
Time: 40 Minutes
Essay Writing on 01 out of 03 given topics (Either in English or Urdu)      15 Marks
Personal Statement (Either in English or Urdu)     10 Marks

■ Detail of the Parts of LAT Test

Part-1. Objective Section

1. English Section
The English portion usually includes:

  • Vocabulary
  • Grammar
  • Sentence correction
  • Synonyms and antonyms
  • Reading comprehension

This section carries high weightage, so students should focus strongly on English preparation.
2. General Knowledge
Questions may come from:

  • Current affairs
  • International events
  • Science
  • Geography
  • History
  • Famous personalities

Students who regularly read newspapers and current affairs magazines generally perform better in this section.
3. Pakistan Studies and Islamic Studies
These sections may include questions related to:

  • Pakistan movement
  • Constitution
  • National history
  • Islamic teachings
  • Important Islamic events

4. Urdu Section
The Urdu part may contain:

  • Vocabulary
  • Grammar
  • Sentence understanding
  • Short comprehension

5. Mathematics
The mathematics section is usually simple and includes:

  • Percentages
  • Ratios
  • Basic arithmetic
  • Algebraic concepts

Most questions are based on Matric-level mathematics.

Part 2. Subjective Section

The subjective section is one of the most important parts of the LAT because it evaluates a student’s writing and analytical ability.
Task 1. Essay Writing (15 Marks)
Students are required to write an essay either in English or Urdu on a given topic. The examiner evaluates:

  • Grammar
  • Clarity of ideas
  • Structure
  • Vocabulary
  • Logical argument

Essay topics are usually related to education, society, law, ethics, technology, youth issues, or current affairs.
Task 2. Personal Statement (10 Marks)
In this section, students write a short personal statement explaining:

  • Why they want to study law
  • Their goals and ambitions
  • Their interest in the legal profession

This section checks the candidate’s expression, thinking ability, and communication skills.

■ How to Apply

The Higher Education Commission conducts LAT through the Education Testing Council (ETC).

Step 1: Visit the Official ETC Portal

Students must visit the official ETC online portal provided on official website of HEC:

Step 2: Create an Account

New applicants need to:

  • Create an online account with their CNIC/ B-Form/Passport number
  • Provide email address and mobile number
  • Create a password

Students who already have an HEC account can simply log in with the registered account details.

Step 3: Fill the LAT Application Form

After logging in:

  • Select “LAT Registration”
  • Enter personal information
  • Add academic details
  • Choose test city

Step 4: Upload Required Documents

Usually, applicants upload:

  • Recent passport-size photograph
  • CNIC or B-Form copy
  • Academic information

Step 5: Pay the Test Fee

After submitting the application, students generate a fee challan and pay the fee through:

  • Bank
  • ATM
  • Mobile banking apps
